Even the highest quality wire mesh will underperform if incorrectly installed. Poor tensioning, inadequate post foundations, wrong fixing methods, and failure to account for thermal expansion can all compromise a fence or reinforcement installation. In the Middle East and Africa, where temperature swings from 5 to 50 degrees Celsius are common, and sandstorms exert extreme lateral loads, proper installation is not just about appearance—it determines whether your fence stands for decades or fails in its first year.

1. Pre-Installation Planning

2.1 Post Installation

Proper post installation is the foundation of any fence:

  1. Mark post positions: Use string lines and marking paint to ensure straight alignment. Post spacing should match panel width (typically 2.5 m or 3.0 m center-to-center).
  2. Drill post holes: Minimum depth of 600 mm (or 1/3 of total post height) and 250 mm diameter. In sandy soil, go deeper—800 mm minimum.
  3. Set posts in concrete: Use a minimum of C25 concrete. Ensure posts are plumb (vertical) using a spirit level. In desert conditions, allow concrete to cure for 48-72 hours before attaching mesh—rapid moisture loss in hot weather weakens the concrete.
  4. Post caps and bases: Install post caps to prevent water ingress into hollow steel posts—a common cause of rust-through from the inside.

Hot Weather Installation Tip: In temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, metal expands significantly. Leave a 2-3 mm gap between panels at the posts to allow for thermal expansion. Without this gap, panels can buckle as they expand. Schedule panel installation for early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are lower—both for safety and for more accurate alignment.

3. Chain Link Fence Installation

Chain link fence requires a framework of line posts, terminal posts, and top rails:

Proper tensioning is the most critical step in chain link installation:

  1. Attach one end of the roll to the terminal post using tension bars and tension bands.
  2. Unroll the mesh along the fence line, weaving the top rail through the top diamonds as you go.
  3. Use a fence stretcher (come-along or ratchet type) to tension the mesh. The mesh should be taut enough that a person cannot push it more than 50 mm with moderate hand pressure.
  4. Secure the other end to the terminal post with a tension bar.
  5. Tie the mesh to line posts with galvanized tie wires at every 300-400 mm (3-4 ties per post for 2 m fence height).
  6. Attach bottom tension wire and tie the mesh bottom to it at 600 mm intervals.

Hexagonal wire mesh gabion baskets require specific installation steps:

  1. Prepare the foundation: Level and compact the base. For retaining walls, excavate to firm ground and install a granular drainage layer.
  2. Assemble baskets: Fold out flat-packed baskets, lace edges with binding wire at 100-150 mm intervals. Tie all diaphragms to the base panel.
  3. Position baskets: Place baskets on the prepared foundation, ensuring tight contact with adjacent baskets.
  4. Fill with stone: Use clean, hard stone sized 100-250 mm. Fill in 300 mm lifts, hand-placing larger stones at the visible face for a neat appearance. Overfill each layer by 25-50 mm to allow for settlement.
  5. Lace top panels: Once filled, fold the top panel over and lace to the sides and diaphragms at 100-150 mm intervals.
  6. Connect rows: Lace upper row baskets to the lower row continuously along the front, back, and ends.

Post-Sandstorm Check: After major sandstorm events, inspect the entire fence line for sand burial at the base, loosened posts from wind load, and abrasion damage to PVC coatings. Sand accumulation at the fence base is one of the most common causes of premature corrosion in the Middle East—it traps moisture against the mesh for extended periods.
