Perimeter security is the first line of defense for any facility, from industrial warehouses in Lagos to military bases in the Gulf. Razor wire and barbed wire remain the most effective and economical physical deterrents for perimeter protection. However, selecting the wrong type or specification can result in security failures, regulatory non-compliance, or premature corrosion in harsh climates. This guide helps buyers make informed decisions when sourcing perimeter security wire products.

Razor Wire vs. Barbed Wire: Understanding the Difference

While often grouped together, razor wire and barbed wire serve distinctly different security functions and are governed by different standards and regulations.

Barbed Wire

Barbed wire consists of a steel core wire with pointed barbs attached at regular intervals. It is a traditional, widely accepted perimeter security product used primarily for agricultural fencing, commercial property boundaries, and as a topping on chain link or welded mesh fences. Barbed wire deters by causing discomfort and creating a psychological barrier.

Razor Wire (Concertina Wire)

Razor wire features sharp steel blades stamped from a strip and clinched around a high-tensile core wire. The blades are significantly sharper and more dangerous than barbed wire barbs, providing a much higher level of physical deterrence. Razor wire is deployed in concertina coils (helical configuration) or flat wrap panels for maximum security applications.

Characteristic Barbed Wire Razor Wire
Deterrence level Moderate Very high
Cutting resistance Low — easily cut with pliers High — blades resist hand tools
Typical application Agricultural, commercial boundaries Military, prisons, critical infrastructure
Installation Strand on fence posts or outriggers Coiled or flat wrap on walls, fences
Regulatory restrictions Minimal in most jurisdictions Restricted in some urban/residential areas
Visual deterrent Low Very high

Razor Wire Types and Specifications

Blade Profiles

Razor wire is available in several blade profiles, each offering different levels of security:

BTO = Barbed Tape Obstacle (single coil); CBT = Concertina Barbed Tape (crossed coil with clips)

Concertina Coil Specifications

Specification Coil Diameter Blade Type Coil Length (expanded) Clips per Coil
CBT-22 Standard 450 mm (18") BTO-22 8–10 m 15–17
CBT-22 Heavy 600 mm (24") BTO-22 10–12 m 19–21
CBT-30 Standard 600 mm (24") BTO-30 10–12 m 19–21
CBT-60 Maximum 900 mm (36") BTO-60 12–15 m 25–30

Core Wire and Blade Material

Barbed Wire Specifications

Standard Barbed Wire

Barbed wire is specified by wire gauge, barb spacing, and barb type:

Iowa-Type Barbed Wire

For maximum-security barbed wire applications, Iowa-type wire features a thicker core wire (up to 3.5 mm) with longer, sharper barbs. It is commonly used in combination with chain link fence outriggers on military and prison perimeters.

Corrosion Protection for Hot Climates

In the Middle East and Africa, the combination of high temperatures, UV exposure, and coastal salt air dramatically accelerates wire corrosion. Proper coating selection is essential:

Galvanized Razor Wire

Standard hot-dip galvanized razor wire (zinc coating 120–200 g/m² on blade strip) is suitable for inland, dry environments. Expect 8–15 years of service life in desert conditions before significant corrosion appears on the blade edges.

Stainless Steel Razor Wire

For coastal and high-humidity environments, AISI 304 or 316 stainless steel razor wire provides superior corrosion resistance. AISI 316 is recommended for installations within 1 km of saltwater. While the initial cost is higher, the extended service life (25+ years with minimal maintenance) often makes stainless steel the more economical choice for critical infrastructure.

Barbed Wire Coating

Barbed wire is available in three coating options: Class 1 galvanizing (light), Class 3 galvanizing (heavy, 2–3 times the zinc of Class 1), and zinc-aluminum alloy. For Middle East and African projects, Class 3 galvanizing at minimum is recommended. Zinc-aluminum alloy coating provides the best value for long-term corrosion resistance.

Key Tip: Razor wire installed along coastal perimeters in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, or Persian Gulf regions should be specified in stainless steel (AISI 316) or PVC-coated galvanized. Standard galvanized razor wire will show blade-edge corrosion within 2–3 years in these aggressive environments, compromising both appearance and security effectiveness.

Installation Methods and Configurations

Concertina Coil on Fence Tops

The most common installation method: concertina coils mounted on Y-shaped or V-shaped outriggers attached to the top of chain link or welded mesh fence posts. Standard installation uses single or double rows of concertina coil, with the coil diameter typically matching or exceeding the fence height to create a formidable barrier.

Wall-Top Installation

Razor wire flat wrap or concertina coils installed along the top of perimeter walls using angled brackets. This is the standard configuration for compound walls in the Middle East, where concrete block perimeter walls are common. Bracket spacing of 2.5–3.0 m provides adequate support.

Ground-Level Concertina

For temporary security or rapid deployment, concertina coils can be placed directly on the ground in single or multiple rows. Military and peacekeeping operations commonly use this configuration for temporary base perimeters. Each 450 mm coil covers approximately 8–10 m of perimeter when expanded.

Barbed Wire Stranding

Barbed wire is installed as multiple strands on fence posts or outriggers. Standard security configurations include 3-strand or 5-strand installations on angled outriggers, providing an effective barrier at the fence top. Wire tension should be maintained at 150–200 kgf per strand.

Legal and Regulatory Considerations

Before specifying razor wire or barbed wire, verify local regulations:
